vRealize Operations Manager 7.5 Workload and Memory Usage metric

Hi guys,

 

Currently we have vRealize Operations Manager 7.5 implemented, and since the upgrade from 6.5 we are facing a lot of issues with our workload and memory usage. Even the VMware support, isn't able to give us a clarify answer on our problems.

 

They mentioned before that this is a known issue, and will be solved in update 3, but we are facing still the same issue.

In version 6.5 we were able to monitor our VMs but after the upgrade, we seen a lot of issues.

 

As example:

 

If I'm going to check the workload of a virtual machine, the workload is always red.

Capacity: 96GB

Usage: 95.99

 

Workload from the metric:

99.98

Lowest: 99.93

 

Consumed%

99.98

Lowest: 99.29

 

 

Memory Utilization:

100,652.

 

Memory usage is 11.92.

If i take a look on the VM it says that it is 56% using of the memory.

 

 

Are there any ideas where it exactly is going wrong? Are there any metrics which can be compared with Windows OS?

And why there is a gap between the vrealize memory usage and windows usage?  and as the memory usage of vrealize is 11.92 why the workload is always 99?

Broker Agent service causing SQL blocking and deadlocks?

Hi Community,

 

I am not sure if anyone can help me with this before I put in an official SR with vmware. So we have a couple of connection servers that have the broker agent installed which are our View Pods.

 

We have had issues with the broker agent service using most of the RAM and in addition, the database team have complained about SQL deadlocks and blocking occurring. Those blocking are gone when I stop the broker agent service. I know this cannot be the fix because I definitely need the service on to record Horizon connected sessions metrics etc.

 

 

The below is on the SQL database server managing one of the connection servers.

 

 

Is anyone experiencing this kind of issue?

 

Please advise.

Monitoring the VMs using VROPS,OS compatibility for installation of VROPS

Hi Folks,

 

I'm new to this environment, I have few simple questions.

 

1. On which OS platforms we can install VROPS?

2 .is it necessary to have VMWare Vsphere to be installed in the same environment for VROPS installation?

3. How to monitor the VMs configured in our environment through VROPS ( just by deploying the VCenter adapter plugin on VCenter server helps us to discover the VMs in VROPS? ) ?

previous vrops versions did not so using esxi shell or powercli was best methods

 

it's interesting that the original version of the old vkernel tool which i had licensed for enterprise use in 2009 provided zombie info so i'm surprised that i've heard vROps does not do that?

View / Report to Display ESXi Host Licensing

I have a view that is embedded into a report for extracting host inventory & details.  I would like to include additional properties for the ESXi host that show "License" "License Key" and "Product".   I do not see any of these as an allowable option.  I also checked super metrics Host System properties but do not see anything applicable. 

Has anyone experienced this or have a workaround for me to include this into a vROPS View?

Metric Thresholds in vROPs 7

Can anyone confirm if you can configure a maximum value that vROPs will store for a calculated metric?

 

Here is my scenario. I am having to re-write a whole bunch of reports that were written in vROPs 6 which used Super Metrics extensively (these were created to cater for our own thresholds and limits). We embarked on a rightsizing exersize for our estate and one of the metrics we used was cpu|size.recommendation which showed the number of vCPU that an oversized VM could be reduced toand still cope with the same workload. The figure always seemed super agressive, 16 vCPU down to 2 vCPU was not uncommon. With vROPs 7, this metric is no longer available, instead we are presented with a metric which displays as  summary|oversized| Virtual CPUs which gives us the number of CPU that a VM can be reduced by(subtly different to the old metric as that showed what it could be reduced to). Simple enough to transpose in a SM (Provisioned vCPU - summary|oversized| Virtual CPUs = correct number of vCPU for the VM based on its workload).

 

So I've written the SM and written the report, but have noticed that in no single case is the value of summary|oversized| Virtual CPUs> 50% of the original provisioned vCPU. Now my real question is, has there been a decision taken that caps the value of this field or is it configurable in the Policy to be more or less aggressive?

 

Any help/guidance/advice gratefully received.

Is that possible collect previous system logs after install VROPS

Hi

 

Suppose i have installed and config my cluster on 17/07/2019 now want to know if i Install VROPS in my environment one months later it will be collect all logs  and data from the same day that installed VROPS or it can get previous logs from vCenter ? for example if install vrops in my environment on 17/08/2019 is that possible access to system monitor statistics and vm statistics or get report for previous dates fro example 20/07/2019 or just can get reports from 17/08/2019

Vc platform every five minutes a vrops warning information

   I have a problem here，

  Vrops UI and management page can be logged in normally, but in the vc console, every 5 minutes there is a red error message: user login failed;

   What is the possible cause of this, how to solve?

Make a dashboard based on vsphere tags

Hi all,

 

I would like to create a simple dashboard for my manager to show several basic parameter of our VI infrastructure.

 

Thankfully to VMignite.com (he did a dashboard like that), i would like to add some metrics based on my vsphere cluster.

 

A VM is made of 5 different tags :

- location

- environnement

- application

....

 

When i create the view that i will use in dashboard, i don't know how to deal with the string that is generated by vrops when reading the tag.

 

Let me explain.

 

This is what is seen :

[<DATACENTER-Value>,<Environnement-Value>,<Application-value>

 

How to create a view that will be able to read only Environnement value and display them in a distribution view ?

 

By default, i have a distribution view with all the string. Each string is unique, so i have a distribution view that doesn't fit to one particular tag.

 

I hope you understand what i mean.

Connection to Windows share fails (offloading reports)

We're using

 

Version 7.0.0.11287812, Build 11287812 of vRealize Operations manager.

 

When trying to add a network share for offloading my reports, I cannot get the network share connected.

My AD user does have read/write access to this share, but I keep getting the:

"Test was not successful: network share plugin test failed"

 

The name of the share I want to connect to I got from "net use" in a dos box on my machine when logged in.

 

I am not sure what is going wrong here.

Does anyone know in which logfile to look (out of the many.....) ?

 

There is no ssh possibility to log in to the vROPS machine, is there ?

Would make it a bit easier for a Linux admin to determine the cause..

VRops Custom Dashboards Missing

I am running vROPs 7.5 and i had a number of custom dashboards created and i was playing around with permissions and now the dashboards are no longer available in the GUI. They must be somewhere i assume. How can i recover them? Is there a location on the OS with all the .xml files?

vCentre Collection Time

We run a multi node cluster of vROps 7.0 in our environment and I have noticed lately that there are often data points missing in objects throughout the day.

 

In troubleshooting, I have noticed that the average data collection time for the vCenter adapter is 4.2 Min and sometimes runs higher.  I think this would explain the missing collection points as the current data collection goes beyond 5 mins and then the next point is missing.

 

I have looked both the vCenter Appliance and the vROps performance and do not see anything that would cause any collection slowness.  Average Disk MS is below 10 ms, proc is 30-40% Memory is not constrained.

 

Node sizing is appropriate as well for the number of objects and metrics and the collection time is consistent at 4.x mins.

 

Any thoughts from anyone?

Policy Alert Definitions Automate Action shows 'Not Applicable'

Greetings all.  vROps 6.7 Advanced here and we're attempting to enable Automated Actions with no success.

 

We are attempting to implement an Alert / Automated Action that automatically deletes vm snapshots after 7 days.

 

Below have been the steps so-far...

 

  1. Enabled Automated Actions in Global Settings.
  2. Enabled Actions in the vCenter Adapter.
  3. Created a custom symptom for snapshot age = 7 days.
  4. Created a custom recommendation that's leverages the 'Delete unused snapshots for VM' action.
  5. Created an Alert Definition 'Automated Alert Action for Deleting Old Snapshots' and included the above symptom & recommendation.
  6. Verified the Alert fires and that I can click the "Run Action" and it goes and deletes snapshots from a VM correctly.

 

So now all I should have to do is go to the Policy and enable Automate Action for the alert definition from #5 above.  But alas, when opening the Policy, hitting 'Alert / Symptom Definitions' and selecting my Alert Definitions, the list shows as 'Not Applicable' under the Automate column and it will not let me enable Automated Actions for this alert.

 

Anyone know what I may be missing here?

What's the difference, VRop Manager for Horizon, vSphere with Operations Management Ent Plus

I run Horizon View and Manage the vsphere infrastructure.  I don't have the full suite for vRealize but have the licenses for Operations 6 Manager for Horizon and vSphere with Operations Management 6 Enterprise Plus.

 

Do i have to run separate Operations manager?  The one for horizon in the download section is "VMware vRealize Operations for Hoirzon 6.6.0 (2018-09-20)" and the one for vsphere is "VMware vRealize Operations Manager 7.0 (2018-09-20)".

 

I run 2 virtual centers, one for "Servers" and one for "Desktops".  If it matters, I have vsphre 6.7U2 across the board and run Horizon view 7.5.1 and starting to deploy Horizon 7.9.

 

I have never run any vrealize products.  But since i have the licenses, i want to run them and hope to get better insight.  But it's confusing on what I should be installing.
