vrealise for horizon - Horizon User Sessions dashboard blank

Hoping someone can help, I've recently installed a vRealise for Horizon v6.2.1 instance.

I've managed to get this setup and most of the dashboards are displaying data however the important dashboard for me named "Horizon User Sessions" is not displaying any data, can some one shed some light as to why this would happen or what I should be looking at to get this working?

Cheers

vROPS storage mngt pack cannot handle diskless VSAN Nodes

**crosspost from VSAN Forum**

__________________________

Hello,

I started using the "Management Pack for Storage Devices" (v6.0.5) in vROPS v6.2

Since then, my two Nodes that are only consuming storage from the nodes that do have disks, keep popping up with this error "VirtualSAN Host has misconfigured storage".

The cause according to vROPS is "vmhba32 has symptom: No Diskgroups connected to the host adapter".

Really? You don't say...

vmhba32 is the onboard SATA controller. The nodes boot of a USB Stick.

Anyway, can someone from the VSAN team tell the vROPS folks that such a thing as a non-contributing node exists

Under/Over Provisioned Virtual Machines

Hi Guys,

I am very very new to Capacity Planning and vROps.

I'm starting to see vROps is huge! massive! but I think what I need is something very simple I hope...

I need to be able to show either through a dashboard or a report that my VMs are spec'd optimally. By this I mean it shows me for example a VM has 8 vCPU and 64gb RAM, but it doesnt need it and could be stripped to 4vCPU and 32gb RAM.

Is this possible? if so, could you guys provide me some direction on how I could configure this and demo it as I'm on a trial version at the moment?

thanks

Use vRealize Operations to get VM snapshots and date taken

Hi,

I'm using vROPs 6.2 and I'm building health reports. One of the things that we really would like to know is which VMs have a snapshot and what date the snapshot was created on. I'm halfway there with the "Disk Space|Snapshot Space" Metric. However I cannot figure out if it is possible to tie a date to when the snapshot was created.

Is it possible to use vROPs to find a date when a snapshot was taken? and if so could you provide me some pointers?

Thanks,

VOA phase 1-2-3 pdf report not working in vRealize Operations Manager 6.3

While at a customer site, carrying out a VOA (VMware Optimization Assessment) using vRealize Operations 6.3.0.4276418 and using the latest VOA reports pack, I can only generate phase 1,2,3 reports with an CSV format.

In version 6.2.1  I was able to generate PDF reports without any error.

In the status column the phase 1 report says "completed partially"

When deselecting the CSV format and selecting the PDF format, the result of generating the report has the status "failed"

Ideas anyone?

vROps SQL Monitoring - Security Permissions and issues discovering/monitoring DBs

$

Hi All,

We are struggling to identify the correct set of permissions required to be able to monitor SQL instances and DBs in our estate. This is a 2 part question/issue, so bear with me

1)

What permissions are required to monitor both SQL instances and DBs? So far, we have the following assigned to our AD service account:

Windows - Logon Locally, Logon as a service. (As it happens, the service account is local admin, so shouldn't have any restrictions)

SQL - View Any Definition, View Server State, and also db_datareader on MSDB/MODEL and each user database.

In some cases, we're getting monitoring on the instance but not on the DBs, others we're not getting any monitoring at all. It seems very random, but permissions are consistent as far as we can tell.

2)

We have 2 vROps instances - PROD and NON-PROD. Both are identical versions, levels and policies, using the same version of the plugins.

In NON-PROD, we are able to discover SQL instances and the child databases.

In PROD, we only see SQL instances - there are no child objects - Checking inventory explorer in both environments we can clearly see that there are no objects of type MSSQL Agent, Analysis, Database, Databases in the PROD environment. Before anyone says anything, they DO exist!

How can this be? Is there anything we can check? Bit stumped on this one....

vROPS Performance Chart

Good afternoon,

Today I received a call from a someone claiming that their virtual machine has high CPU utilization over the past week. In the past, I was able to go into vCenter, click on the VM then click on the performance tab and pull a graph over the last week. (See attached example)

I am now trying to pull the same thing out of vROPS 6.0.1. I can't find a simple way to do the same task. Can someone please provide the steps to do this if possible?

Thanks in advance.

Monitering snapshots

Hi

We get requests for snapshots all the time at all hours of the day. We currently use the vcenter scheduled tasks function to run the snapshots at a particular time. We set up a email alert that notifies a couple of ppl when it runs. The problem is we get a mail when that task starts the snapshot process not if the snapshot was taken successfully.

Is there a way to have vrops alert when a snapshot fails and look at the scheduled tasks for the name of the VM that the task started and if both VM names match send an email.

vCenter / vRops - Sharing my scripts

Hello Everyone,

I use vRops Suite-API and PowerCLI for vCenter to get data out for my day to day... sometimes I found a wealth of information on the interwebs and sometimes I couldn't find info at all..

So I started a blog last week to share the stuff that I am doing with vRops and vCenter specifically in the Capacity and Performance space....if you are interested feel free to check out my blog http://vman.ch/

Some of the scripts / examples I already have are:

vRops – suite-api – createCustomGroup

vRops – suite-api – addProperties

vRops – suite-api – createReport & downloadReport

For anyone which has ever tried to consume metric data via the Suite-API.... they know how painful it can be! one of the key script I built and which I keep building functionality into pulls multiple metrics, for multiple objects, transforms the data and push it into an XLS, it then builds in the Pivot + it generates a second tab in the XLS with information relating to the host, vm, datastore etc...  This is something i use on a daily basis to provide data to customers (I will be this one will be coming soon)... something which I started with here: Help using Suite-API - getStatsOfResourcesCSV with Powershell Invoke-RestMethod

For vCenter I will also be sharing a powershell script I built to collect Inventory, relationship and metric data... this includes real time data collection using multiple jobs to collect simultaneously (also coming soon)

Cheers

Horizon Adapter Instance Name blank on Horizon Adapter Self Health Dashboard in Horizon Adapter widgit- vRealize Operations for Horizon 6.3

Instance Names occasionally appear as blank on Horizon Adapter Self Health Dashboard under Horizon Adapter widgit.  The blank instance shows as data receiving in the widget but Horizon Adapter Statistics widget shows NO DATA.  Horizon Broker Agent widget shows all names and collecting.  Administration / Solutions / VMware Horizon shows the adapter instance is collecting and data receiving.   Usually will see 1 or 2 of the instances names in the dashboard go blank at a time.  Bringing cluster offline and back online is usual fix.  Anyone see this before?

vROPS 6.2.1.3774215 - Storage Devices Solution Collection Status "Object Down"

Hi all,

Issue: vROPS 6.2.1.3774215 - Storage Devices Solution Collection Status "Object Down"

vCenters are on 6.0 u2.

vROPS 6.2.1.3774215 - Fresh deployment of Linux Appliance and there is a Master and Master Replica node.

The "VMWare vSphere" adapter is collecting and receiving data successfully.

I had configured the "Management Pack for Storage Devices" with working domain credentials that have the Administrator role in all my vCenters.

The "Collection State" is "Collecting" but the "Collection Status" is "Object down".

I have stopped the cluster and also restarted it using the standard sequence and this also did not change anything.

Does anyone know what the status means? Noting on Google that i am aware of.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks!vROPS_Object_Down.PNG

A couple of example images attached..

I want to revert from the green circle back to the solid green box..  HELP

Thanks in advance

Anyone have issues with wait cycles not working correctly? I'm having alerts created on the first cycle even though I've specified 3 wait cycles. I did that for symptoms and alerts and we still are getting alerted on the same cycle.

How do I add multiple items at once to a vRealize widget?

$

I am trying to make a sparkline graph of CPU usage for 100+ vms. I can't figure out out to configure the widget except by selecting each VM one at a time in the middle selectbox and then clicking on Cpu usage in the right hand selectbox.  These VMs are all the same virtual machine folder. If I select the VM folder, the RH selectbox says "No metrics to select."

I can select multiple hosts and then use the "perform multi-select interaction" button, the items get added but the widget comes out blank.

How can I make a sparkline graph for 100+ hosts without having to select each host and its metric one at a time?

This is vRealize Operations Manager 6.2....

Thanks -w

Ignoring vROPS alarms for memory stress?

$

Hey all,

I am still having difficulties understanding the metrics active memory in vCenter and memory demand in vROPS and how they relate to the metrics from inside the guest OS:

In my understanding, active memory tries to sample the actual memory usage of the VM on the ESXi level (see: Understanding vSphere Active Memory - VMware vSphere Blog). Memory demand in vROPS is derived from this metric with some RAM added for the OS (source: Iwan Rahabok´s great book: VMware Performance and Capacity Management - Second Edition).

Also he is saying that RAM should be monitored on the guest OS level (see: How to monitor Windows RAM usage with vRealize Operations 6.1), so this is what we are doing with an Icinga agent inside the guest OS.

The VM is a Windows backup VM with 16 GB RAM who is doing a full backup at Friday night:

For this VM vROPS tells me to extend RAM to 17,34 GB because of memory stress:

And now the same timeframe for this VM from inside the guest OS through the monitoring agent:

As you can see the maximum value of memory used from inside the guest OS is approx. 9 GB.

So my question is can I ignore the alerts from vROPS regarding memory stress and where is the big difference coming from?

Does the guest OS maybe read from the page cache of Windows and this is reflected in vROPS but not counted as used memory inside the guest OS?

And if I lower the RAM for this VM will the backups run a lot slower because of the missing page cache?

For any insights I would be really grateful!

Thanks and regards,

Creating a symptom for a badge

Anyone try creating a symptom for a badge? I get the message below when I try. Really? I want to create a dynamic threshold symptom that would tell me if the compliancy change and then alert me if it changes. This would be very helpful as my security team is looking for something like this. Is there a way for me to work around this?

Cannot create or update a new Badge symptom definition 'Compliance changed'. Badge symptoms are managed by the system
