Error encrypting csv for Bulk User Mappings in vROPs

$

Hey Guys,

I am running vROPS version 7.5 for a customer (vCenter 6.7) and we are using the service discovery adapters to list all the services running within the guest os on all VMs.

I followed the method to Export the csv for the guest user mappings for the VMs and when after entering the login details in the csv, the next step is to encrypt the csv using the gpg command.

However when I issue that command, I get the below error message.

gpg --symmetric filename.csv

can't connect to `/root/.gnupg/S.gpg-agent': No such file or directory

With the above error there is still a file with .gpg extension created however when I apply the bulk user mappings with that file, it fails with the below error:

Failed to read the mapping file: Error decrypting file, the file might not be encrypted

Does anyone know how to fix the can't connect to `/root/.gnupg/S.gpg-agent': No such file or directory error to ensure the encryption actually works?

The same error was also seen when running vROPs 7.0 for the same customer.

Cheers,

Identifying OS Type Mismatch - Need a Supermetric?

$

A little long-winded history (I opened an SR - awaiting feedback) -

So turns out, vROps actually has two different properties (much like RVTools does) to show the VM's Guest OS Type configuration setting and a different one to show the Guest OS as seen by the VMware tools.  Unfortunately, the Dashboards, Views, Summary Display, & Reports do not tell you which property they are using in their generic labels.  So depending on what and where you're looking in vROps, you could potentially be looking at the wrong thing if you have improperly configured VMs.

For instance, say you build a VM as 2008R2 back in the day, and you did an inplace upgrade to 2012 but forgot to change the Guest OS Type in vCenter to 2012.

Looking at that VM In vROps, "VM > Details > Property|Configuration|Guest Fullname" will show 'Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit)'.

However, also looking at that VM in vROps, under "VM > Details > Property|Summary|Guest Operating System|Guest OS Full Name" will show 'Microsoft Windows Server 2012 (64-bit)'.

If you look at the VM's Summary page / About Me section, it shows the 'Summary|Guest Operating System|Guest OS Full Name' value.

If you look at that same VM in the default dashboards or canned VM Inventory Summary view, it shows the 'Configuration|Guest Fullname' value.  But, you don't know that because a custom label (by VMware-- not me/end-user) was applied to the View to just show "Guest OS" so you don't know what you're looking at unless you edited the view to get the specific property.

It's a major PITA and misleading!

Obviously we need to correct all these so the mismatch doesn't exist in the firstplace; and, I can create a view that shows both properties and then export to xls and filter on ones that aren't equal-- but that's all even more PITA.

I'd like to create a supermetric (call is OSMismatch) that says something like, "if "Configuration|Guest Fullname" != then set OSMismatch = '1'"  or something along those lines.

Does anyone know if you can actually DO something like this in a supermetric?  ie, compare two properties and set a new boolean value based on the compare results?

Can someone help to generate a daily report for below tasks through vRealize Operations? I want to get this report on daily basis in a single dashboard or file for 3 different vCenter servers. I am using vRealize Operations 6.7.

  • Number of VMs migrated through DRS in last 24 hours.
  • Physical adapter Status of ESXi Hosts
  • List of Host in maintenance mode
  • List of Datastores over provisioned
  • New VMs created in last 24 hours
  • VMs removed in last 24 hours
  • Snapshot report
  • Snapshot older than 7 days

EP Ops Windows service monitoring

Hello,

I'm using EPOps to monitor Windows services but have noticed that when a service goes down and an alert is sent, there is no mention of the server that hosts that service and since these service alerts are being catered for by engineers that atm don't have access to vROPS it is proving very unfruitful for us.

Does anyone know if it is possible to add the server name in the Windows service alert?

Thank you!

Urgent Notice: vRealize Operations SSL Certificate Update (v6.x and above)

$

Just received this today may be of interest. The link to the KB is VMware Knowledge Base

Dear Customer,

Customers that have installed vRealize Operations v6.x and above may be impacted by the internal SSL Gemfire certificate expiration on November 19, 2019. The internal certificates for vRealize Operations Manager are set to expire five years after its initial installation. For example, if vRealize Operations 6.0.0 was installed on November 19, 2014, and incrementally upgraded to later versions, the internal SSL certificate will expire on November 19, 2019.

There is a required PAK file update that has been released for customers running vRealize Operations v6.x and above that renews the certificate to prevent it from going into system inoperability.

Please refer to this KB article for more information on how to check the expiration date and instructions to upgrade your vRealize Operations internal certificate.

License only specific Clusters in vCenter

$

I'm hoping to find out if it is possible to restrict licensing usage for vRealize Operations to a specific set of clusters.

The reason this is required is that we have dedicated clusters for specific purposes, but managed by the same set of vCenter servers. Specifically we have ESXi clusters reserved for prod and preprod, in two datacentres, servicing cloud foundry environments. The other clusters which I do not need to monitor, are used for other infrastructure services and applications.

So in summary I'd like to be able to use vRO to monitor the clusters used for PCF only. Is this possible or would I need to license vRO for all clusters, including those clusters not managed by my team?

Paul

Sums of metrics of VMs

Hello,

I can't figure out if it's possible to create the kind of dashboard I want:

I have virtual machines that have been assigned a tag "Sys1" in my vCenter.

How to create a dashboard that summarizes the metrics of certain virtual machines?

CPU Count (Cores) of all VMs "Sys1"

Memory Granted of all VMs "Sys1"

Disk Provisioned of all VMs  "Sys1"

etc.

I created a custom group called "sys1" with defined membership criteria "Virtual Machine" - Properties - Summary | vSphere Tag - Contains - Sys1"

But then, wherever I try to apply this group, I can only look at the resources of each machine individually.

Please, help me

Thank you!

How to monitor the VMs using vROPS

Hi Folks,

Can you please elaborate on how to monitor the VMs using vROPS.

I understand that once we add the VCenters into VROPS, all the related VMs inside the VCenter gets automatically discovered.

1. Do we need to install any management packs to monitor the VMs

2. How to do deploy the policies onto those VMs

3. Where is the default policy for VMs located in policy library and what is the name of that policy.

4. After VMs gets auto-discovered, does the default policy gets auto-deployed.

Please help.

Integrating VRLi with VROPS

Hi Folks,

Below URL shows how to integrate VRLI with VROPS.

Configuring vRealize Log Insight with vRealize Operations Manager

But I have few questions related to this.

1. Does all the event & log data  get forwarded to VRLi from VROPS and vice versa

2. If yes, can we send all the log and event data from VRLi to splunk through data input option in splunk

Please help.

Thanks

Sandeep.
