ResourceConfig.getStatus does not exist. Is there any other way to get collection status of a resource object?

I want to remove the resource objects from the inventory explorer of my adapter which has collection status as RESOURCE_STATUS_NO_DATA_RECEIVING. Since vROPs does not immediately remove them, they are getting accumulated and causing a slowdown of the system.

What I'm thinking of doing is checking the collection status of each resource and if it is RESOURCE_STATUS_NO_DATA_RECEIVING, I'll set the collection state as RESOURCE_STATE_NOT_EXISTING which will be removed by vROPS according to this (VMware Knowledge Base).

 

But when I'm getting the ResourceConfig using getMonitoringResource(ResourceKey), It is just giving me the collection state of the resource using ResourceConfig.getState() but not the status.

The function to get status as mentioned in documentation (vrealize-operations-manager-SDK-70-programming-guide) does not exist which is ResourceConfig.getStatus().

 

Is there any way I can get the status of resource object? Or any other way I can tackle the problem I'm facing?

I thought of getting resource status for object type Process using ResourceDto object but I could not create the ResourceDto object for the Process Object type.

From Datastore to Datastore Cluster

Hello everybody,

 

i hope its not that complicated and i just miss a point in this.

 

What if done:

 

Create a Custom Group which includes Datastores with less than 200 GB of diskspace left.

Create Dashboard an put a view on it which shows me all datastores in this Group with information Like Name, Total Capacity, Used Capacity, Free DiskSpace or if Snapshots on this lun.

 

What i would like to do next.

 

I would like to click on the specific Lun and than i would like to fill outer views or object lists on the dashboard with informations like..

 

In which Datastore Cluster is the DS located?

Which other Datstores are in the Cluster an how do the look like?

 

What would be awesome if i could do this all in one view and the information just change while im clicking on the objects.. but i know its not possible so it would be ok if i had to create two new views which one of them show me the datastore and the next shows me the luns in the datastore.

 

At the end.. the question is..

How can i show the Datastorecluser of a Lun whit Dashboard intreactions in an new view of my dashboard?

Adding Resource Pool and Application Name to VM's with Custom Property

Hi all,

 

We did this recently and thought I’d share - mainly to glean if this is an efficient way of doing this, or I’m missing something.

 

In previous versions of vROps we struggled reporting on Resource Pools and Application names because we couldn’t work out a way of including this information on existing VM reports.

 

We recently upgraded to vROps v7.5 and have been using the Custom Property feature.

 

We created Custom Groups of the resource pools like this: http://www.vmignite.com/2016/03/vrops-6-creating-groups-by-vm-folders-resource-pools-for-reports-and-dashboards/ and added these two custom properties (Resource Pool name and the vCPU:pCPU ratio target for the group).

 

We did similar for Applications, but added the Custom Property in the Administration, Inventory screen:

 

This allows us to report on VM’s like this:

 

And we created a Super Metric to calculate total pCPU allocation for a VM:

 

 

Lastly, we also created a Super Metric for the Custom Groups to sum the pCPU:

 

Feel free to give any suggestions if I’m over complicating this.

Windows Licensing Super Metric

Hi.

 

Im trying to create a view that lists total number of VMs pr host / Cluster or Datacenter. But I only want the sum to be servers that require Windows server licensing based on "Guest OS"

I can't find a way to do this without a Super Metric, have anyone else done this or have any tips on how to create the metric?

Licensing group based on OSI but hosts get "invalid license" watermark

In vROps 6.7 I would like to create a license group based on OSI (vm), not CPU (host). I do not have enough licenses based on host cpu, but I do have enough licenses based on the number of vms.

 

In the license group, if I only create a Virtual Machine criteria then all my hosts have the "invalid license watermark". When I add a second criteria in the license group with an OR and select "Host System", then the watermark disappears but a warning comes up about not having enough CPU licenses.

 

Questions:

1. In my understanding, licensing on the vm level also means all hosts they run on are licensed, correct?

2. If so, how should I setup the license groups to accomplish this?

vROPS configuration for workload placement in vRA

Hello All,

 

Does anybody try to make vROPS configuration for workload placement with vRA ?

I'm trying to configure  it  but without sucess for now.

 

What i did :

 

- vROPS endpoint inside vRA ( collection is ok  and metric providers also)

- Select vROPS inside vRA placement policy

- add vRA adapter inside vROPS ( collection is ok )

- create a custom group ( to have a list of all esx inside one particular cluster ( Cluster_Lab) )

- create a policy

 

 

when i try to deploy a blueprint ( previously created, few month ago )  from vRA it doesn't go inside the specify cluster previously set.

Do i miss something to make it works ?

 

I followed those vmware documentations :

Configure vRealize Automation for Workload Placement

 

 

Info : vRA and vROPS are  in 7.5 version

Does one VROPS Setup can be integrated with two instances(Test/Prod) of ServiceNow

we have only one setup for VROPS and no test environment, thus do we have any mechanism that VROPS setup can be integrated with two instance (Test/Prod) of ServiceNow.

Optimization Status is Unknown in vRealize Operations Manager.

I have a vRealize Operations manager server.

And add a vCenter.

 

When I select Home > Workload Optimization on the server websit.

The Optimization Status is Unknown.

Why? what should I do?

SPBM Disk policies and vRops 6.7

We have had major issues with VMs not being in compliance with their SPBM disk policies I have had a look in vrops 6.7 and their does not seem to be an easy way of exposing this information. We have some very large vsan stretched clusters and we would like to create a dashboard that has a list of VMs that are not in compliance with their disk policies

 

Is this something that can be done

Alerting handle a failed FC card

I'm using vROps to monitor my VMware environment, and recently had an FC card die in a host.  The dead FC card did not trigger an alert, as we still had multiple other paths to the storage through the second configured HBA on another FC card.

 

I can think of two ways to alert on this case: 

 

The first option was to create a symptom for any storage device path with a status of dead. 

The second option is to create a symptom for a host with less than one online FC HBA. 

 

Unfortunately, I don't see any properties or metrics that would allow me to create an alert for either of the options

 

Has anyone had any success in configuring a similar alert?

Is it possible to filter Excluded VMs from an Oversized VM View/Report

I am very new to vRealize Operations Manager, but I have figured out how to make some basic reports in our system. We are doing a rightsizing initiative and we are utilizing vRealize Operations Manager to give us a report of VMs that are Over/Under Sized. Like any organization we have applications owners who want us to exclude their machines from our effort. I found out how to Exclude these VMs from the rightsizing section on the Home Screen. However I would like to take it one step further and filter out these VMs from the Oversized VM Report to make our Monthly Monitoring effort less time consuming.

 

If someone can tell me how to do this it would be greatly appreciated. I have already tried googling it and I found nothing.

Application Discovery Guidance

Good morning Communities .

 

I need some vRealize Expert Guidance .

I want to know what the best way would be to identity Applications in my vSphere , and also map out application dependencies .

 

However , vROPS has undergone so many changes , I am not sure what components i should be using

I currently only have vROPS 7.5 Advanced addition , and doubt i will be able to convince management to buy additional components like network insight .

 

My original plan is to just just VROPS 7.5 with Service Discovery 2.1 MP with common credentials .

After successful discovery of 90% of my farm , the product was really disappointing . Some Services identified ( small list ) and no relationship data is shown

EG , this Apache web server talks to this Postgres DB back end . It also does not support Guests with multiple IPS , so my Centos nested Docker VMs are ignored .

In short , not as good as the old VIN was .

 

So from reading KBs and Google I gather the following .

Can you help me identify what you guys have successfully  implemented / tested :

 

  • Network Insight appears to bring a lot to that relationship questions . However , its a separate product , so need to buy it , and also appears to be heavily focused on

       NSX based infra s. We have old school physical cisco switches and Fiber channel storage , not SDDC .

  • ARC , appears to have replaced VROPS End point operations . However , with only 16 applications covered by VROPS , this simply will not be enough .
  • ARC with Wavefront appears to provide many more applications , but as a basic principle , we would like to keep our data in the DC , not sent external .We also have

       no experience with Warefront , perhaps you can share your experiences . I must mention we are in South Africa , so external bandwidth cost is a factor . Telegraph agents

       would be sending data to "the cloud " so cost implications .

  • Another option i have been playing with is Azure Migrates dependencies , its free and appears to work well . This is however obviously not what the product is designed for

        and feels strange to use Azure for vSphere discovery . Also subject to external bandwidth problem

 

 

What are you guys using ?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated , specifically solutions that I have under my currently licensed  vSphere enterprise , and VROPS advanced stack .

How can I add a Custom Log on the top left on a Dashboard?

Do I need a widget with logo inside? How can I do it?

VROPS 7.5 dashboard autoswitch

I am trying to get my dashboards to auto switch between three dashboards.  I have preformed the steps in the documentation.

 

How You Configure an Automatic Dashboard Switch

1 Double-click a dashboard from the list to configure.

2 From the Auto Transition drop-down menus, select On.

3 Select the switch time interval in seconds.

4 Select the dashboard to switch to and click Update.

5 Click Save to save your changes.

On the home page, the current dashboard will switch to the dashboard that is defined after the specified time interval.

 

The autoswitch never happens, and for some reason it only saves my setting sometimes that I changed for the autoswitch.

 

Is anyone else able to get this to work with this version of VROPS?

Monitor Server UP/Down using vRops ?

Hello, is it possible to have vROPs send out email alerts if a server (VM or Physical) goes down ?  We are trying to retire an old software suite that currently provides this functionality, and we wish to use vROPS.
