Issue about Time Settings and Roll Up interval

Hi everyone.

I have an issue about the feature "Series Roll Up" on a custom report.

Test 1 :

- the roll up interval = 1 month & Relative Date Range = Last 1 Months. The CPU Contention = 0.15 % on my ESXi. (see picture 01)

- Time settings "Relative Date Range" = Last 1 Months & the roll up interval = None. The CPU Contention = 13.44%. (see picture 02)

Does anyone know why? Do you know exactly what Roll Up is?

Thanks for your feedback :-)

Guest memory monitoring

Hello

I am new to VRops, trying to figure out the best way and metrics to monitor the guest memory please

some recommend this is best to be done from the guest itself using perfmon or resource monitor.

I am aware VRops can use End point agent on guests to get more accurate readings.

What metrics would you recommend?

I am trying to understand of using metrics for optimals VM RAM sizing.

Many thanks all

vRealize Operations 6 - Trying to run a report for average disk i/o latency of 10ms or greater.

Version 6.6.1.6163035

Build 6163035

I'm new to vROPs and need to run a disk I/o latency report.  Does anyone know how to setup and execute a report showing a list of virtual machines with average disk latency of 10ms or greater?

I've run this report honestly about 12 times and it doesn't give me what I need and there are just so many canned options that seem like the correct things but once the report is ran, I don't get what I need.

Any assistance would be great.

Thanks,

Performance Report

Hi,

We are running vRops 6.6 and we want to run a performance report against a list of VM's.

I have created a custom group with all the VM's which we want to run the report against. The big problem is that I want to run the report with data from only the normal working hours 8-17.

This is a customer running a lot of Citrix servers and therefore it's not relevant to use the data from e.g. 30 days unless these data is only from the time frame specified. I have tried playing around with "Time Settings" and "Group By" in the view but I haven't been able to solve this.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Guest VM sizing - CPU/RAM

I am trying to find a best way to size the VMs, I understand the NUMA concept and ideally VM should stay withing same NUMA domain rather then crossing in between.

If the Blade has 2 sockets x 12 cores, i understand the single NUMA domain would be 12 cores or 12 VCPUs? so VM should not be allocated with more then 12 CPUs in order to stay in the same NUMA domain?

in this example it would have 24 cores in total or 48 Logical CPUs if Hypertreading on, does this mean that max VCpus on single ESXI host should ideally be 48 vCPUs (same as Logical CPUs)? that would be ratio 2:1?

Many thanks all for your responses

Missing and empty widgets in OOTB dashboards using Clarity GUI

i,

Some of the OOTB Dashboards have missing and empty widgets.
Clearing the browser cache (cookies, downloads etc.) used to fix this, but not any more.

Log Insight has the same issue.

I suspect that Clarity somehow is involved in this.

Any tips on how to prevent and fix this permanently?

The screenshots below displays the same object using a working browser and a browser with issues.

Both are Chrome on different desktops.

(The browser with issues used to work fine)

Browser displays all widgets and they contain data (Click for full size)

Browser is missing several widgets and the widgets displayed are missing data (Click for full size)

NOC Dashboard Display - Home

I'm in the process of configuring NOC Dashboard Display whilst the Autoswitch component is easy to configure, the problem I face, is that I have to manually click on Dashboards -> Home for the display to start and rotate between dashboards. Is there a way to make this default to that particular page in vROps 6.6.1?

VROps API: Mapping from a statkey instance to its resource

Hi,

I'm attempting to use the API to extract some monitoring data about VM's.  I'm interested in getting the allocated space in a datastore for each VM.

I can get the required stat for each datastore by first listing the statkeys for the VM, then running the query below for each statkey that matches config|hardware:*|disk_Space

suite-api/api/resources/stats/query

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?><ops:stat-query xmlns:ops="http://webservice.vmware.com/vRealizeOpsMgr/1.0/" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">    <ops:resourceId>***</ops:resourceId>    <ops:statKey>config|hardware:3351|disk_Space</ops:statKey>    <ops:rollUpType>AVG</ops:rollUpType>    <ops:intervalType>DAYS</ops:intervalType>    <ops:intervalQuantifier>4</ops:intervalQuantifier>    <ops:dt>false</ops:dt>    <ops:metrics>false</ops:metrics>    <ops:currentOnly>false</ops:currentOnly>    <ops:begin>1515369600000</ops:begin>    <ops:end>1515624194000</ops:end></ops:stat-query>

I get a response back like this with the stats that I need:

<ops:stat><ops:timestamps>1515686399999</ops:timestamps><ops:statKey><ops:key>config|hardware:3351|disk_Space</ops:key></ops:statKey><ops:rollUpType>AVG</ops:rollUpType><ops:intervalUnit><ops:quantifier>4</ops:quantifier><ops:intervalType>DAYS</ops:intervalType></ops:intervalUnit><ops:data>60.0</ops:data></ops:stat>

The issue I am facing is how do I resolve the statkey with instance, eg 3351 back to the datastore resource, or even just its name?  This happens in the UI, but I cannot figure out where the reference is

vROPS 6.6.1 with Horizon View Adapter 6.4.0

Hi,

I updated recently to vROPS 6.6.1.

My question is about the "Total Logon Time". I thought this value is the addition of "App Stack Attach Time" + "Profile Load Time" + "Shell Load Time" + "Interactive Session Time", but my Total Logon Time is a lot higher than the addition of the single times, so where is the gap?

This is not an issue of one, almost all logons show this behavior no matter if they are on a linked clone or on a full clone.

All Userprofiles are redirected by GPO as well as the user home.

Here is a screenshot of this:

By the way, we do using App Volumes at this time, so the "App Stack Attach Time" is not reasonable here.

Used Versions:

vROPS Appliance 6.6.1

vCenter 5.5.U3

Horizon View 6.2.4 (some Agents are still on 6.2.3 but this will be fixed within the next few weeks)

Can anyone help me to find the missing seconds?

Hello,

I installed VROM 6.5 for horizon  and 6.4 agent on our desktop vm.

When a user logging in on a VDI desktop, VROM show it's metrics around 5 minutes later...

Can we change that polling interval somewhere ?

thank you

Any one come across this error with EPO agents on vROps 6.3?

"Unable to communicate with server -- provider not yet setup. Agent might still be initializing. "

This is the first time I have installed EPO agent which I tried after an upgrade from 6.2 to 6.3.

This is the same on both Linux and Windows VMs.

Under EP Ops Adapter in Inventory Explorer all the collection states are showing as collecting and receiving.

Due to these security alerts and looking at VMware Knowledge Base it gives a list of thing to do. One of them is

For each virtual machine, enable Hypervisor-Assisted Guest mitigation via the following steps:

  1. Apply all security patches for your Guest OS which are available from the OS vendor.
  2. Ensure that your VMs are using Virtual Hardware Version 9 or higher. Upgrading a virtual machine to the latest hardware version (multiple versions) (1010675)discusses Hardware Versions .
    • Virtual Hardware Version 9 is minimum requirement for Hypervisor-Assisted Guest Mitigation for branch target injection (CVE-2017-5715).

The question i have has anyone ever updated the hardware from the default v8 for vrops. and if so are there any tools updates to be done first?

Super Metric - Virtual Machine's Datastore (Available Space)

$

Hello everyone!

I'm new on the creation of the Super Metrics on vRops, and I'm stuck on something that would be really helpfull if I get it working.

Here is what happens:

I'm trying to create a Super Metric that, when you apply it to a Virtual Machine, it gets the Available Space of its Parent Datastore.

Tried to combine some Metrics and Attributes like "${this, attribute=summary|datastore" (Virtual Machine metric) with "metric=capacity|available_space" (Datastore metric) with no success.

Can you guys lend me a hand on this?

Thanks!!

No metrics from new vSAN Adapter in vROps 6.6

This morning I've added a 2nd vSAN adapter in vROps but when I browse my dashboards there is no information displayed for the new adapter. When I look at the configured adapter instances under Administration - Solutions it states that the collection state is Collecting and collection status is Data Receiving. Is there a minimum polling period before information will populate into dashboards? I don't believe I've missed a step when adding the adapter as it seems to be configured correctly.

Thanks.

VROPS 6.2 Storage capacity reports

Hello

I am relativly new to VROPS.

At our place we are trying to use VROPS for storage what if analysis for various incoming projects.

We would like to set 30% total disk space buffer (HA, and FFT1) . I am checking Capacity remaining report but unable to figure out how to change the buffer from 10 to 30% and get the accurate figures?

Anyone aware how this can be done?

Why vROps is probably not the product you are looking for

$

Half a year ago, we have begun to use vRealize and I would like to point out in this post, what really stressed me out during usage.

First I want to thank VMware to finally bring the GUI to HTML5, as it at least improves the UI. Unfortunately, the underlining product persists to be an overcomplicated and unhandy piece of software. Let me explain what leads me to this statement and where that disappointment comes from.

1. Metrics over metrics and no one knows what they mean

I like metrics, and yes I like to have as much as possible to get to know what goes on in my environment. However, I only like them, if I know what they mean, or at least, if I can somehow find out what they mean by consulting the documentation. Unfortunately, VMware seems not being able to deliver that information in a quick and understandable fashion. There are tons of metrics that are calculated by vRealize itself. The output is often a percentage of “something”. It is intransparent how that percentage is calculated and what it actually means for my environment.

Let us for example take the metric “CPU Workload %”. I was notified by vRealize about the following alert, which was triggered by a “high CPU Workload %” symptom on the cluster:

“Fully-automated DRS-enabled cluster has high CPU workload”

One could think it must be the percentage to which a resource’s CPU is used. However, what’s the “CPU % Used” metric then? The “cpu % used” as well as the “cpu %demand” are both way under the “cpu % workload” value. What does that mean? Ok may I just don’t get the concept and I should head to the documentation. As this Metric is applied to the cluster, it for sure should be stated in the “Cluster Compute Resource Metrics” section:

http://pubs.vmware.com/vrealizeoperationsmanager-66/index.jsp#com.vmware.vcom.core.doc/GUID-F6638548-7D0D-42A4-B774-9BF1EFB95E94.html

However, no CPU Workload listened there. Hmm… additionally they refer in the documentation to the metric key (which is not visible through the guy at all). It may could be one of these workload metrics listened there, dunno, and even if I would find the correct one, the often provided one-liner explanation would most certainly not help me out anyway. As a last resort I go to the communities forum and the explanation I get is “Workload is a vROps synthetic value that is derived using multiple raw metrics that, when combined together, gives you a true indicator of how busy/utilized a resource is.

Nice, now we have it. “CPU %Workload” is a vRealize calculated metric that somehow, should tell me something. I neither know what caused this high value nor do I know what I can do to decrease the value or if an action is required at all.

I often not go this far to get to know what a metric means, as it is just to overcomplicated and in the end I mostly end up do not getting smarter at all.

A similar issue I face is, when we talk about the “Analysis” Tab, which is available for each object. Most of the underlining “dashboards” are pretty hard to get. As there are videos linked, that should explain those, I think VMware is aware of the difficulty user’s face when using them. Unfortunately, even after watching those video, I often only have an assumption what exactly they should tell me, how they are calculated or what I have to do, to improve this situation, if anything is really necessary.

2. Reporting is pretty basic/useless

Sure, you can do reporting as with every good monitoring tool. However, even though the process of creating reports is simple, the output is most of the times unusable. The views and charts do scale portly inside the generated pdf and you end up having a document with charts and tables going over multiple sites. Additionally most of the times one is facing reports with views, which are empty at all because somehow the object which one selected is not supported for that kind of data. I am sure this does make sense somehow, but letting the user experiment what does work and what not, is just a frustrating processes. I ended up getting familiar with the API and script the report by myself. However, even this overcomplicated. As we need the “metric key” for gaining access to the metrics value we have to first get this one. Unfortunately, metric keys are documented for the vSphere part only, not for the Horizon Adapter. The only way I was able to obtain them was by exporting a dashboard which included those metrics and look into the generated xml. Once again, not the usability I expected.

3. Customizing Alerts

There are tons of alerts in vRealize and for sure you need to customize them to fit your environment. The process to do so is once again a complete disaster in terms of usability. Because alerts (and maybe symptoms too?) are resetted when performing an upgrade you have to duplicate all alerts (and maybe symptoms too?) first. Afterwards you can change what you’d like and in the end you have to disable the original Alert in the policy.

Ok, it’s not this much, but if you have to do this with every alert it really starts getting you frustrated, because you can’t simple go to alert and change for example the cpu usage percentage to 90% instead of 80%.

4. All the rest

Here some other issues that vRealize faces, as I not have time to get into detail in all of them, here a short list:

  1. Bad integration of stateless automated View Pools
  2. Complicated process for disabling Alerts on specific Objects
  3. No possibility to disable certain alerts during maintenance windows (for example backup times)
  4. Finding the right objects when configuring widgets can get frustrating, as the navigation tree logic is abstruse.

Overall I would most probably not buy the product again. It’s inability to deliver knowledge of how to interpret and use the product is disappointing. Intuitively and easy handling is missing and you often end up just disabling alerts or metrics as you don’t know what they should represent anyway.

The onliest reason for us to use it, is that at the time of purchase lots of horizon metrics could not be extracted directly through the api, what forced us to buy a product capable to monitor it. As VMware recently changed its API, one can do it now without buying an over engineered, over complicated product.

This is my personal thought. May I am just too dumb or lazy to understand this product, so just give it a try, if you wish to. For me the product would need fundamental refactoring or even a complete rebuild to get to something I can recommend to others.

Monitoring the vCenter appliances services from within VROPs 6.6

Hi guys,

We have had a lot of success monitoring services on VMs using the EPO agent on Windows machines.  We have issues with some of our 6.0 vcenters webservices going down while the fat clients continue to work.  I would like to monitor the webserver components for these appliance but I do not have a strong Linux background so I'm not sure what is entailed.  Does anyone happen to have a link to a step by step document?

Thanks,
