vROPS 6 backup best practices, is live incremental backup possible?

$

We have a four node cluster, a master node and three data nodes, and we're looking at options to back it up. The only way I'm currently confident to back it up is to turn off the cluster, power off all the nodes, and stash a copy of the vmdks somewhere. Is it possible to take a backup without turning off the cluster? Does anyone have a solution that is taking incremental backups while the cluster is live?

We are using vRealize Operations Manager 6.0.0.2263110. We have configured required alerts but all alerts are not updating every 5 mins. Some of them are not updating from days.

Cluster going offline takes too much time

Hi everyone,

I turn off the cluster in order to restart vRops but it's taking way too much time. The reason I want to restart is because the UI is so slow. Does any one had this issue before?

What would be the problem ?

---EDIT ---

After waiting for a couple of hours, the cluster shows :Cluster failed to go offline

Thank you very much.

Changes to Stress aren’t saved/displayed

All,

My changes to edits of a Stress are not being saved/displayed.

When I select Analysis Stetting> Virtual Machine>Stress and make the following changes:

Resource                   Demand                     Time

Memory                      85%                            10 minutes

CPU                           75%                            5 minutes

I then select the lock symbol to lock selections I just made.  Next, I select Save. However, when I leave the page to force an Object to poll and come back, changes I made revert to the default. Has anyone had this issue?

The changes to the Stress are working since the alert cleared.

How to convert a mathematical formula into vROPs super metric ?

Hi,

I have a mathematical formula that my customer's SAN admin uses for calculating Avg latency across LUNs in a VNX storage pool. This is shown below:-

LUN       IOPS      Avg_Response

1              10           20

2              100         2

Response time for storage pool = ((10*20) +(100*2))/(10+100) = 3.6

I have to create a super metric in vROPs using this formula. Is this possible? Please help.

Hi everyone,

We have installed the MP Operating Systems / Remote Service Monitoring, but in fact it has no object in the inventory:

I would like to know; how to enable it ?

Will this MP allow us to monitor the hosted applications in the VMs ?

Thank you very much.

vRops indicating that an application version is obsolete

Hello every one,

I want to check please if it is possible to know that an application (installed on a VM) has an obsolete version (in the same way we can easily know that VM tools is old in a VM)? Is there any metric in the end point solution for that?

Any idea ?

Thank you.

Maintenance Schedules and Active Policies

Hello All!

Please bear w/ me as I try to explain this:

Environment: 1 Cluster multiple hosts, we have backup windows nightly from 6p-1a and weekend full's kick off Friday 6pm last till Sunday 3am.

I'm not sure the best approach on this, i'm wishing to be able to create Maintenance Schedules so that we can exclude metrics during these times as it skews reports for us.

I know i can assign a single Maintenance Schedule, but my problem is I need to apply 2....

Because I ran into this roadblock, I went and decided well maybe I can create 2 Policies assign each Schedule to each policy, and apply those policies to a custom group i created.....

Well, I guess you can't apply multiple policies to the same group (which makes sense), but how can I go about doing this? I can't be the only client wanting to exclude a couple time periods of data in a work week.

If this is by design, I can live with that, but if anyone has a way i can accomplish this, that would be great.

Thank You all, and MTFBWY

Host is not in MM in VC. But in vRops alert displaying as MM

Hello Friends,

In my environment few hosts are not in MM. All VM's are working fine in respective hosts. When i check those hosts in vRops Administration - Inventory Explorer it's showingData Receiving. Even i checked the metrics collection status, those details are collecting fine.

One thing i noticed is in vRops it's showing brown color question mark symbol on host (Image1). Even i started to collect data in vRops but no luck. Please check the image attached herewith.

Let me know how to clear the alerts even the host is not in MM in vRops.

Automatic closure of faulty events

Hi All,

I have plenty of events/alerts which have been reported to vRealize Operation Manager from vCenter regarding faulty hardware/network port problems.

Is there any way to force those alerts to close them automatically once they are closed/fixed in vCenter?

vCPU Utilization

Hi,

i am reading the VMware Performance and Capacity Management book from Iwan.

In one part of the book, he is creating a line chart with cpu information from a vm with multiple vcpu´s.

In that sparkline, he has all vcpus in one chart. So you will be able to see if one vcpu has different utilization.

Also unter the chart are the vcpu´s with color and name listed.

But i don´t know how to do that. I didn´t get it how to create such a chart. I don´t know what metric is displaying me all those informations.

VBlock name associated with a datastore

Good Day All.

For one of the reports, we need to display vblock name associated with a datastore. The name of Vblock is not readily available under property list and our thought was to add a second data source (Virtual Machine) to the existing view. This resulted in blank rows where we see just the properties of VM and other rows pertaining to Datastore. We were wondering if you happen to know how we could get Vblock/vcenter name associated with a data store.

Appreciate your help.

Thanks

Adding a new Stress to vSOM Policy

All,

Is it possible to create a new Stress in a vSOM Policy?  Looking at Stress (Policies>Policy Library>Edit>Analysis Settings>vCenter Adapter – Virtual Machine>Stress), I can make changes to a Stress such as Memory, CPU, Memory (Consumed), etc. I would like to add a new Stress.  Example:  I would like to add another CPU Stress but have this one alarm when CPU usage exceeds 85%. Can I create a new Stress?

Thank you,

vROps - Monitoring Apache HTTPD server-status URL using EP Ops agent

$

Hi All,

Has anyone successfully configured the EP Ops agent to monitor the Apache server-status URL?

When using Hyperic, it was possible to configure monitoring via 127.0.0.1/server-status. However, I've been unable to identify what hostname to configure in the Remote-Checks URL monitoring of vROps

I have essentially followed this guide:

http://www.vmignite.com/2016/03/vrops-6-1-how-to-monitor-websites-urls-ip-addresses-and-ports-using-epops/

But the hostname field is where I'm struggling. (I've tried many variants such as http://127.0.0.1/server-status, localhost etc).

Apache httpd.conf configuration hasn't changed and is as follows:

ExtendedStatus On

<Location /server-status>

SetHandler server-status

Order Deny,Allow

Deny from all

Allow from 127.0.0.1

</Location>

Thanks in advance

Hi All,

Has anyone created a view, dashboard or report to generate a list of VMs without EP Ops agent installed? If so, can you explain how you created it?

I'd like to ensure that our entire estate is being monitored correctly.

Thanks

Allocation Based policy does not show actual powered on vcpu usage

$

It seems even though a policy is configured with Allocation only the capacity remaining analysis page still uses analytics to calculate the used amount. I thought allocation was based purely on the number of vcpu's that are powered on - for example when the CPU Allocation option is set in the policy. However it seems "average demand" is what it considers as used and not the actual powered on and running vcpu's in virtual machines. The result of this is that I am seeing capacity remaining for a cluster, configured with a 1:1 cpu overcommit policy, still showing a number of remaining vcpu's even though I have provisioned more vCPU's than the number of cores in all the hosts. This seems like it isn't purely allocation and some what a hybrid configuration between allocation and demand. The total and usable amount of capacity is calculated correctly using the overcommit ratio, but the amount used is based on demand and hence called Average Demand. Can someone shed some light on this? Is there anyway to strictly use the number of powered on vCPU's as the used amount?
